"Hunger doesn't take the weekend off."

 Gaston County BWFP

For Gaston County Schools partnering with local churches and organizations...
Children are the innocent victims of the economy.  Children who are hungry and malnourished cannot learn and grow properly.
In the Gaston County Schools, there are more than 30,000 students in grades K - 12.  Currently, about 60% of these students have to rely on a free or reduced lunch and breakfast at school each day.
Hungry children cannot learn.  The mission of the BWFP is to feed children during the weekend so they can come to school ready to learn.  The BWFP provides these students with nutritionally balanced meals at a cost ranging form $4.00 to $6.00 a day.
In the last school year, nearly 20 community partners provided weekend food bags for over 380 students in 17 different Gaston County elementary schools.
However,  weekend hunger doesn't end at the fifth grade.  Our goal is to continue the BWFP in the elementary schools and develop partnerships to provide weekend food for hungry students in the county's middle and high schools, as well.
